Position Title: Territorial Planning Unit – Summer Student Placement
Hourly Wage: $13.00/hour – $21.00/hour depending on qualifications
Location: Grand Council Treaty #3 Administrative Offices, Kenora, ON

The Territorial Planning Unit at Grand Council Treaty #3 is seeking a Summer Student interested in a career in natural resources and an environmentally-related field. The Territorial Planning Unit works with Treaty #3 Leadership and its 28 member communities to protect the lands, waters, and resources within the 55,000 square miles that make up the Treaty #3 Territory.
The Summer Student will assist the technical and policy staff in the Territorial Planning Unit on a variety of environmental and natural resources issues. Responsibilities may include researching issues using the internet; briefing staff on relevant issues and keeping them updated on the most recent developments in the environmental or natural resources sectors; editing reports and fact sheets; preparing presentations using PowerPoint and other software; and assisting staff in preparing for meetings with Treaty #3 leadership, legal counsel, government representatives, and others.
The Summer Student will gain experience working with First Nations leadership, staff, and community members, as well as representatives from federal, provincial, and local governments, non-profit environmental organizations, and experts. The Summer Student will have the opportunity to work on a variety issues related to climate change, sustainability and energy related matters, co-management, watershed and land-use planning, and a variety of other files and issues. The Summer Student will be mentored by senior TPU staff. The key qualities we are looking for include an interest in science or policy, intellectual curiosity, strong initiative, and effective writing and communication skills. Preference will be given to Treaty #3 members who are current students and who will be entering/returning to college or university in the of Fall of 2017. However applications will be considered from all students with an interest working with First Nation communities.
