Position Title: Environmental Science & Policy Intern
Salary: $42,000 – $52,000
Location: Grand Council Treaty #3 Administrative Offices, Kenora, ON
Closing Date: April 18, 2017 at 4:00 p.m.

The Territorial Planning Unit at Grand Council Treaty #3 is seeking an Environmental Science & Policy Intern for a one-year period. The Territorial Planning Unit works with Treaty #3 Leadership and its 28 member communities to protect the lands, waters, and resources within the 55,000 square miles that make up the Treaty #3 Territory.

The intern will assist the technical and policy staff in the Territorial Planning Unit on a variety of challenging and groundbreaking environmental and legal issues. Responsibilities may include researching issues using the internet, scientific journals, and interviews with experts; briefing staff on technical/legal issues and keeping them updated on the most recent developments; drafting reports and fact sheets; procuring technical information and undertaking scientific and policy analyses; preparing presentations using PowerPoint and other software; and assisting staff in preparing for meetings with Treaty #3 leadership, legal counsel, government representatives, and others.

The intern will gain experience working with First Nations leadership, staff, and community members, as well as representatives from federal, provincial, and local governments, non-profit environmental organizations, and experts. Interns will have the opportunity to work on a variety issues related to climate change, sustainability and energy-related matters, co-management, watershed and land-use planning, National Energy Board hearing processes and other regulatory matters, and a variety of other files and issues. The intern will work with senior TPU staff who will provide mentoring, guidance and advice, thereby facilitating learning and performance. The key qualities we are looking for include a background in science or policy, intellectual curiosity, strong initiative, effective writing and communication, and an interest working with First Nation communities.

Preference will be given to recent post-secondary graduates.
